EDINBURGH COLEGE OF ART

Edinburgh College of Art was founded in 1760 as the Trustee's Drawing Academy of Edinburgh, whose primary aim was to train designers for the manufacturing industries.

In 1858 the Academy was affliated with the Department of Science and Art in London and became the Government School of Art for the City of Edinburgh.

The college was given its current name after the Scottish Education Department took over its responsibility and sited overlooking the Grassmarket of the Old Town, opposite Edinburgh Castle.

The main red sandstone building, in Beaux Arts style, was completed by architects John More Dick Peddie and George Washington Browne in 1909. It officially combined forces with Edinburgh University in 2011 and consequently now offers courses of study in the fields of Art History and Music.
