SURGEON'S HALL

The Surgeon's Hall Museum had its origins in a collection of "natural and artificial curiosities" started by
the Incorporation of Edinburgh Surgeon's in 1699.

This body became The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in the early years of the eighteenth century with its focus on anatomy and pathology leading
to the donation of collections by John Barclay (Anatomist) and Charles Bell (Surgeon).

This new and extensive inventory would be accommodated by the building of the present day Surgeon's Hall (1832) commissioned to Sir William Playfair, then Edinburgh's foremost architect.
