USHER HALL

A landmark in Edinburgh's West End, Usher Hall was constructed with funds from benefactor, William Usher,
the son of a Whisky Distiller and completed in 1914.

The design by architects Stockdale Harrison & Howard
H. Thomson of Leicester adhered to a brief for a simple structure housing a concert auditorium with the capacity
for a large seated audience (approximately 2,200).

The neo-classical architecture in Beaux Arts style, is a notable departure from the Victorian Gothic of the time with curved walls allowed by recent developments in
reinforced concrete.

The domed roof was a visual necessity to the circular footprint of the building, though not conducive to the acoustic requirements of the interior which has a flat ceiling. The plaster panels within, by local scupltor Harry Gamely, depict famous Scots and celebrated musicians from centuries past. Recent refurbishments finished in 2009, have allowed the venue to continue to host events by the Scottish National Orchestra, Edinburgh International Festival and numerous artists from across the Globe, attracted by its reputation as an premier location for the performing arts.
